Buenos Aires is where nearly every journey through Argentina starts and ends: a port city of wide avenues, old cafés and neighbourhoods that each keep their own pace, from the cobbles of San Telmo to the parks of Palermo. An hour out, the city gives way to the Pampas, the grassland that made the country, and to the Delta, where the Paraná breaks into a thousand channels before reaching the river.
Most itineraries give the city two or three nights at either end, enough for a walk through its barrios, a night of tango and a long dinner. From there, a day or a night at an estancia near San Antonio de Areco or San Miguel del Monte puts horses, gauchos and an asado within easy reach, and Tigre opens the Delta by boat.
The city works all year. Spring, from October to November, brings the jacarandas and the polo season; autumn, March and April, the kindest light for walking. January is hot and half-empty, as porteños leave for the coast, which some travellers like and others don't.
