Austral Patagonia: Argentina & Chile

Ushuaia, Torres del Paine, El Calafate and El Chaltén

The grand loop of the far south in two weeks: Tierra del Fuego and the Beagle Channel, the towers of Paine, the Perito Moreno and the trails under the Fitz Roy.

Four names carry most of the weight of southern Patagonia, and this journey gives each of them room. It starts at the end of the world, on the Beagle Channel, crosses Tierra del Fuego and the Strait of Magellan into Chile, settles inside Torres del Paine and then returns to Argentina for the ice of Los Glaciares and the granite of the Fitz Roy. Mostly overland, by the same buses and roads the region runs on, it lets the scale of the south sink in between one icon and the next.

For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

First-time visitors to Patagonia who want all the essentials in one trip and don't mind the distances between them. Active without being demanding: the walking is there for those who want it, and every place has a gentler option.

Why it works

  • It connects Ushuaia, Torres del Paine, El Calafate and El Chaltén overland, so the steppe, the strait and the border crossings become part of the trip instead of a series of flights.
  • Two nights inside Torres del Paine save the long daily drive from Puerto Natales.
  • Free days in each place leave room to tailor the trip: Upsala, the ice trek on the Viedma, horses or a long trail.

Good to know

  • The Viedma glacier ice trek in El Chaltén has to be arranged the day before.
  • The longest walks in El Chaltén, to Cerro Torre or the Laguna de los Tres, take six to nine hours.
  • The trip runs on regular buses and shared excursions.
