Santiago, culture and wine

Two days in Santiago between Neruda's house, the memory of the dictatorship and the city's hills, and a night among the vineyards of the Casablanca and San Antonio valleys.

Santiago is often a night between flights. Given two days, it reveals a capital that faces its recent history openly, set between the Andes and a ring of hills. An hour away towards the Pacific, the cool coastal valleys of Casablanca and San Antonio make some of Chile's best white wines.

Day 1 · Bellavista and the Museum of Memory

Highlight · La Chascona, the house Neruda built in Bellavista for Matilde Urrutia.

La Chascona, the house Pablo Neruda built in Bellavista in 1953 for Matilde Urrutia, his secret love and later his third wife, opens the visit. Lunch in the neighbourhood, then the Museum of Memory and Human Rights, dedicated to the victims of the human rights violations of 1973 to 1990 and to the conversation about why they must not happen again.

Night · Santiago de Chile

Day 2 · The civic centre and the hills

Highlight · Santiago laid out below the San Cristóbal hill, reached by cable car.

The old centre on foot: the Plaza de Armas and the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Pre-Columbian Art Museum, one of the finest in the city, the Paseo Ahumada to La Moneda, the Central Market and the Mapocho station. Then Lastarria and the Santa Lucía hill. In the afternoon, past the Fine Arts Museum back to Bellavista and up the San Cristóbal hill by cable car for the view over Santiago, and finally the boutiques and houses of Vitacura and Alonso de Córdova.

Night · Santiago de Chile

Day 3 · Casablanca and San Antonio valleys

Highlight · Dinner at a biodynamic vineyard in the San Antonio valley, and a night among its vines.

Drive · 1 h

An hour west towards the coast and Valparaíso, two family wineries in the white-wine valleys: a tasting and lunch at the first, and at the second, in the San Antonio valley, a vineyard worked biodynamically, with a tour, tasting and dinner. The night is at the vineyard, in the Casablanca valley.

Night · Santiago de Chile

Day 4 · Casablanca to Santiago

Highlight · A last free morning among the vines of the Casablanca valley.

A free morning among the vines before the drive back to Santiago airport.

For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

Travellers with an interest in history and wine who would otherwise only change planes in Santiago. A natural start or end for any Chile itinerary, and a link to Patagonia, the Atacama or Rapa Nui.

Why it works

  • Two days in the city give room for its recent history, not just its monuments.
  • The night among the vineyards turns a wine day trip into a stay, without driving back after dinner.

Good to know

  • The Pre-Columbian Art Museum is closed on Mondays.

Every journey here is a starting point.
