Austral Patagonia: Argentina & Chile

Patagonia, independent and active

A two-week small-group departure with a German-speaking tour leader: Torres del Paine, four days of trails around the Fitz Roy, the Perito Moreno and a final stay in Buenos Aires.

"Patagonia has left deep roots in my thoughts," wrote Darwin, and he was neither the first nor the last. Endless steppe, beech forests, turquoise lakes at the foot of granite giants, and people who make every stranger welcome around an asado. This departure is built for travellers who like to move on their own steam: public buses between the great places, guided walks on the big days, free days to choose for themselves, and a German-speaking tour leader alongside from the first evening in El Calafate to the last morning in Buenos Aires.

For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

Active travellers who are happy to walk, ride public buses and choose their own free days, and who want the company and reassurance of a German-speaking tour leader. Suited to small groups of German speakers and to solo travellers joining a departure.

Why it works

  • Four nights inside Torres del Paine and four in El Chaltén give each place time, with guided walks on the big days and free days in between.
  • The walking builds up, from easy lookouts to the Torres and the Laguna de los Tres.
  • Ending in Buenos Aires adds the city to a trip that is otherwise all mountains, and the same departure runs in the opposite direction, from Buenos Aires to El Calafate.

Good to know

  • A German-speaking tour leader throughout; the mountain guides on the big walks speak English.
  • The longest walks are about 19 km to the Torres and 24 km to the Laguna de los Tres, each with 700 to 850 m of climbing.
  • Groups of four to twelve travellers.

Every journey here is a starting point.
