Northwest: Salta, Jujuy & Puna

Northwest soft walks and Iruya

A week with a driver-guide through the Calchaquí valleys, the Puna and the Quebrada de Humahuaca, with short walks every day and a night in the mountain village of Iruya.

Seven days, three worlds: the vineyards and adobe villages of the Calchaquí valleys, the high, empty Puna with its salt flats, and the Quebrada de Humahuaca with its painted hills and colonial churches. Someone else does the driving, and every day has its short walk, an hour or less, enough to leave the road and feel the place underfoot. At the end, the road runs out at Iruya, a village of steep stone lanes where the mountains close in on every side.

Day 1 · Salta

Highlight · A first evening in Salta, at the start of the road north.

Arrival in Salta and the first evening in the city.

Day 2 · Over the Cuesta del Obispo to Cachi and Cafayate

Walk · Quebrada de las Flechas

Up the Quebrada de Escoipe and the Cuesta del Obispo to the Piedra del Molino, at 3,600 m, then across the Los Cardones national park along the Recta del Tin Tin, traced by the native people at 3,000 m with the Nevado de Cachi, over 6,000 m, on the horizon. Cachi, cobbled and colonial, has its cactus-wood church and an archaeological museum of 5,000 pieces covering 10,000 years. After lunch, south through Seclantás, Molinos, San Carlos and Animaná, villages that dry peppers for paprika, and a short walk among the white sandstone blades of the Quebrada de las Flechas before Cafayate, at 1,700 m among its vineyards.

For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

Travellers who want to see the whole Northwest in a week without driving, and who enjoy a short walk but are not looking for a trekking holiday. A good fit for a first visit, before or after Buenos Aires and Iguazú.

Why it works

  • In seven days it covers the three landscapes of the Northwest: the Calchaquí valleys, the Puna and the Quebrada de Humahuaca.
  • The walks are short, forty minutes to an hour, so they add to the day rather than shape it.
  • Returning to Salta between the valleys and the Puna breaks up the long drives.
  • The night in Iruya reaches a village most itineraries leave out.

Good to know

  • The route reaches high altitude on day 4, over 4,000 m between Muñano, Salinas Grandes and the Cuesta de Lipán, after two nights at lower levels.
  • Services are shared, in a vehicle with an English-speaking driver-guide.
  • Days 2 and 4 are long days on the road.
  • A version without Iruya, in seven days with a night in Cachi, follows the same route.
