Mendoza to Salta along the Andes

Two weeks and some 2,000 km north along the eastern foot of the Andes, from the vineyards of Mendoza through Ischigualasto and Talampaya to the Calchaquí valleys and the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Between Mendoza and Salta lies the Argentina that hardly anyone crosses: the high valleys of San Juan under the Mercedario, the Triassic badlands of Ischigualasto and the red canyon of Talampaya, the vineyards of Famatina where wine is still trodden by foot, the largest Inca ruins in the country, and then the Calchaquí valleys and the Quebrada de Humahuaca. For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

Seasoned independent travellers who enjoy long drives through empty country and want more than the classic circuits: geology, archaeology, wine and craft villages on a single road. Pairs with a few days in Buenos Aires at either end.

Why it works

  • Runs south to north, so the wine of Mendoza comes first and the Northwest, with its two-night stops, slows the end of the trip.
  • Two nights in Villa Unión and Cafayate give rest days after the long desert legs.
  • Links two regions usually sold apart, through places few travellers reach: Barreal, Famatina, Shincal, Belén.

Good to know

  • About 2,082 km in all. A medium car or a 4WD; there is gravel between Villa Unión and Belén, from Belén to Cafayate and between Cafayate and Cachi.
  • May to July is much colder.
  • Days 4 and 7 are long, six hours or more at the wheel.
  • The car is picked up in Mendoza and returned at Salta airport.
  • In Mendoza and Salta, dinner in a local home can be added.
