Buenos Aires, tango, wine and the Delta

Three nights in Buenos Aires that go past the postcard: a milonga where locals dance, a cooking class in a chef's home, an asado and a day on the waterways of the Tigre Delta.

Buenos Aires gives up its best at the table and on the dance floor, usually late. These three days cover the city's history and neighbourhoods, then go where porteños actually spend their evenings: a traditional milonga, a chef's private home, an asado. A day on the river closes the circle, out to the Delta and back by water with the skyline ahead.

Day 1 · The city and a milonga

Highlight · Los Laureles in Barracas, where old milongueros and young dancers share the floor to vinyl.

An afternoon through the history of the city, from the Plaza de Mayo, where most of Argentina's history has been made, along the Avenida de Mayo to the cobbled streets of San Telmo, to La Boca and Caminito, and on to Puerto Madero, Retiro, Recoleta and Palermo. At night, away from the tourist circuit, a traditional milonga such as Los Laureles in Barracas, a century-old bar where amateur singers, old milongueros and young dancers share the floor to the sound of vinyl.

Night · Buenos Aires

Day 2 · Cafés, wine and a chef's kitchen

Highlight · A closed-door restaurant, where the evening ends at the table with the dishes just cooked.

A walk through the centre, the Obelisco, the Congress, Plaza de Mayo, a coffee at a traditional café and the 360-degree view from the Galería Güemes. In the afternoon, a tasting of five limited-production wines from boutique wineries with local tapas. In the evening, a cooking class in a chef's home, a closed-door restaurant, ending at the table with the dishes just made and Argentine wines.

Night · Buenos Aires

Day 3 · The Tigre Delta and an asado

Highlight · Back by boat across the Río de la Plata, with the skyline of Buenos Aires growing ahead.

A full day north of the city in Tigre: the old fruit market turned crafts market, the rowing clubs and Belle Époque houses, and the maze of rivers and streams of the Paraná Delta. The return is by boat down the Tigre river and across the Río de la Plata, with the skyline of Buenos Aires growing ahead, landing at Puerto Madero. At night, an asado with the full ritual: picada, achuras, a bife de chorizo and wines chosen for each course, and a hand in the grilling.

Night · Buenos Aires

Day 4 · Buenos Aires

Highlight · Departure from Buenos Aires after three days of tango, wine and the river.

Flight out of Buenos Aires.

For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

Travellers who want Buenos Aires through its food, wine and tango rather than through its monuments alone. Opens or closes any Argentina itinerary.

Why it works

  • Each day pairs a classic part of the city with an evening locals would recognise as theirs.
  • The return from Tigre by river shows Buenos Aires from the water, an angle most visits miss.

Good to know

  • The milonga at Los Laureles runs Thursday to Saturday; on other nights the evening is at another traditional milonga.
  • The wine tasting is closed on Sundays, and the asado runs on set days of the week.

Every journey here is a starting point.
