Torres del Paine, the classic hike

Three nights inside Torres del Paine, with a half-day climb to a lookout over the massif and the long day to the foot of the granite towers.

The towers that give the park its name are three columns of granite left standing by the ice, hidden from the road at the head of a valley. Seeing them takes a long day on foot. These three nights in the park build up to it: a first walk to read the geography of the massif, then the full hike to the base of the towers.

The big day: on foot through three landscapes, steppe, forest and mountain. The trail climbs a valley of lenga forest and crosses wooden bridges over streams that fall from the hanging glaciers of Monte Almirante Nieto, to the moraine at the foot of the Torres del Paine. The hike is guided in a small group of two to twelve walkers from around the world, with a box lunch on the trail.

For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

Fit walkers who want the Torres without the full W circuit or refuges. It joins El Calafate and the Argentine side of Austral Patagonia, or Puerto Natales and Punta Arenas on the Chilean side.

Why it works

  • Staying inside the park saves hours of driving and puts the trailheads close.
  • A shorter walk on day two works as preparation and as orientation before the long day.

Good to know

  • The hike to the base of the towers takes eight to nine hours and demands good physical condition.
  • The day-three hike is a shared group, from two to twelve walkers.
  • Arrivals can be arranged from Puerto Natales or from El Calafate.

Every journey here is a starting point.
