Argentina through its communities

Two weeks from the milongas of Buenos Aires to the salt flats of the Puna and the Guaraní forest of Misiones, staying with Andean families and meeting the people behind each place.

The great landscapes of Argentina are the easy part. What stays with travellers is the people who live in them: the milonguero who still dances by the codes of the 1940s, the weaver in a Calchaquí village, the family who harvests salt on the high plateau and cooks dinner for whoever sleeps under their roof, the Guaraní guide who reads the jungle. This journey crosses three regions and keeps that thread from beginning to end.

Day 1 · Buenos Aires

Highlight · La Boca, Palermo and Recoleta on foot, with the Teatro Colón and the Casa Rosada between them.

A first afternoon on foot through the neighbourhoods that explain the city: La Boca and its Italian immigrants, Palermo with its parks and avenues, French-styled Recoleta, and the landmarks between them, the Teatro Colón, the Congress and the Casa Rosada.

Day 2 · By bike and kayak to the Tigre delta

Highlight · An hour and a half by kayak among the houses on stilts of the Paraná delta.

Then the long crossing to the Quebrada de Humahuaca and Purmamarca, with a walk along the Los Colorados path behind the Cerro de los Siete Colores. The evening is a cooking class in Tilcara, half an hour up the Quebrada, preparing and eating the empanadas of the Northwest.

For the planner

What we tell the agencies we build this journey for

Who it's for

Travellers who want to understand a country through its people more than its sights, and are happy to trade hotel comfort for a family home for two nights. It suits culturally curious couples and small groups, and the community thread carries well into longer journeys.

Why it works

  • Each region has its own encounter: tango in Buenos Aires, weavers and cooks in the valleys, salt harvesters in the Puna, a Guaraní community in Misiones.
  • The two nights with families in the Puna come after a gradual climb through the valleys and the Quebrada.
  • Iguazú is seen from both sides and then from inside the forest, which turns a sightseeing stop into a stay.

Good to know

  • The Puna days reach 3,600 metres at the Salinas Grandes; the nights there are with host families in private rooms with shared bathrooms.
  • The hike on day 8 is optional, with a village drive for those who prefer not to walk.
  • Day 6 is a long road day, from the Calchaquí valleys to the Quebrada de Humahuaca.

Every journey here is a starting point.
