Trevelin was founded by the Welsh settlers who crossed Patagonia from the Chubut valley at the end of the nineteenth century, and its name means "town of the mill" in Welsh. The old flour mill is now a museum, the tea houses still serve the cakes of the settlers, and in 1902 the valley's families voted to remain in Argentina, a story the town tells with pride. In spring the fields around it fill with tulips.
Trevelin is a short drive from Esquel and works as a quieter base for the Parque Nacional Los Alerces, a short drive from the park. An afternoon is enough for the mill and a Welsh tea; one or two nights here leave the days for the park. The road west crosses into Chile towards Futaleufú.
November to April is the best time, with the tulips in October and November. Winter is cold and calm.
