Puerto Libertad

Puerto Libertad

Puerto Libertad lies on the Paraná about forty minutes south of Puerto Iguazú. Its story is that of the Bemberg family, who settled here in the 1920s and founded the first large-scale yerba mate company in Argentina, building a port, Puerto Bemberg, to ship it down the river. The family estate is now a lodge surrounded by four hundred hectares of forest, with trails, viewpoints over the river and the history of the yerba mate in every corner.

It works as a quieter base for the falls, one or two nights instead of a hotel in town, or as a rest on the way south towards San Ignacio, Posadas and Iberá. Days go on forest walks, birdwatching and the river, with the Argentine side of the falls an easy drive away.

April to October is the best season, with cooler, drier days. Summer is hot and humid.
