Self Hike and Drive Patagonia

Everything starts in El Calafate. As soon as we arrive at its modern airport a bilingual Tour Guide will be waiting for us  to take us to our hotel where we’ll leave our luggage and  then go along with us to the Car-rental Company to pick up the car we’ll be driving during our Hike and Drive Patagonia trip.

We thought it would be a wonderful idea to combine the rented car plus a GPS for the roads and a Trekking GPS for the walks we’ll be taking.

We will be visiting the Perito Moreno Glacier and consider the possibility of taking the Minitrekking. The Minitrekking  walk is moderate and the surface of the Glacier is irregular but solid and safe. It  starts with a 20 minutes walk  along the Lake banks until we reach the Glacier. The walk on the Glacier lasts  about 2 hours to appreciate different ice forms.

It not only draws thousands of local and foreign tourists to its wonderful show every time a breaking in the ice takes place, but the Perito Moreno Glacier is also becoming a mystery to the scientists that can´t understand its behaviour.

On the third day we went to El Chalten, also known as the National Capital of Trekking. On the way to El Chalten we suggest to stop at La Leona Petrified forest where you will be able to do a trek to the Petrified Forest, where large petrified tree trunks from 0,5 to 1,2 meters in diameter and  fragments of dinosaur bones can be admired. This excursion is not included in the price of the program but you can ask for it to your Kallpa Account Executive. A fair physical condition is required due to the fact that the site is abundant of steep hillsides, broken terrain and loose soil. Wind and water erosion is significant here and allows encountering new surprises every visit.

SAM_7055Upon arrival to El Chalten we will have the introductory talk given by The National Park guard. In El Chalten we will spend four days visiting beautiful mountain trails´ landscapes, watching cascades, waterfalls, glaciers and taking different walks, for instance, on the second day we walked to the Laguna Torre where we caught sight of Mount Torre and its steaming peaks caused by the clouds that usually cover them. Another choice is trekking to Laguna de los Tres that offers an excellent view of Mount Fitz Roy. On the third day we suggest walking on the ice of Viedma Glacier, the biggest one in the Glaciers National Park.

trekking-to-the-huemul-glacier-highlightOn the sixth day we visited  Lago del Desierto, located 32 km north of El Chalten. It’s A lake that links Argentina with Chile and is surrounded by beautiful forests and glaciers. We’ll be ending our trip in El Calafate where we´will spend the last night before our return.

The diversity of landscapes, the different activities and the possibility of coming and going in our rented cars and with different possibilities of trekkings available in El Chalten pre-loaded in the GPS provides travellers  a total  sense of freedom and made this trip unique in its type. For those who like to travel without being subjected to timetables this is the best option ever. That´s why we recommend the Hike and Drive programme offered by Kallpa Tour.

The World Polo Championship is held every three years and, as time has passed, Argentina has become a world power, with three championships (1987, 1992 and 1998) and one sub championship (1995). The Argentine Polo Open Championship is the most important in the world at club level. Among the important figures we can mention Adolfo Cambiaso (Jr.) considered the best player in the world, another source of Argentine pride.

Trekking and Canoes trip in Ushuaia

We wake up early in the morning It´s a cloudy day but then the sky starts to clear and we can see a piece of its blue and the sun as an anteroom to our Trekking and Canoes trip in the National Park.

Two hours later we are on our way to the National Park Tierra del Fuego, where we’ll spend the day trekking and canoeing on Lapataia Bay.

As we walk through the National Park the highly trained guides tell us about the geology, the history and the flora of this region. We pay our admission fees and then we move on to our starting point.

trekking-and-canoes-trip-in-ushuaia-2

We are divided into two groups of six people each. The first group starts with the trekking, our group gets on the canoes and starts with the sailing. We then get on the van and we head towards Lapataia Bay. We are briefed about safety measures in the water and we are given the necessary gear: life-jackets and water-proof pants and boots.

In  a few minutes  we find ourselves on the calm waters of Lapataia River that flows into Lapataia Bay, a northern bank fjord of the Beagle Channel, about 15 kms from Ushuaia.

trekking-and-canoes-trip-in-ushuaia-3

On this trip we watched different kinds of birds, and we had the chance of seeing some penguins swimming, something that doesn’t happen very often. The nature around us is indescribable. Ushuaia is the only place in Argentina where lakes, sea and forest get together. This is also the place where the old Yámanas or Yaganes sailed. They were nomads, hunting and fishing on canoes. Their ancestors from 6000 BC years used to walk all over the islands and the channels south of the Beagle up to the Hornos Cape. They also got around the Fueguino channels west of the Beagle, Kawesqar´s territory, all the way to the Magdalena and Cockburn channels in search of the iron pyrite they used to light fires.

trekking-and-canoes-trip-in-ushuaia-5After walking for two hours approximately, we got to Lapataia Bay where we docked our boats and got on the van that took us to have lunch. A good and delicious roasted chicken was waiting for us. We then set off on a 3 hours trekking through the Fueguino forest along the banks of the Beagle Channel. It was a unique chance of getting to know this place in Argentina full of beautiful spots.

Join us for an Inspiring and spiritual experience

In its original expression, the Miracle has a penitent´s kind of spirituality leading to the great Reconciliation and Renewal of the Pact of Fidelity, which is the utter expression of the covenant between God and His people. Join us for an inspiring and spiritual experience and live Salta diferently.

The people of Salta express their great devotion every September 15th, with a massive festival following nine days of prayer and devotion. In a country where more than 95% of the population is Catholic, it’s hard to find a celebration matching the Lord of Miracles &  the Holy Virgin festival in Salta.

Pilgrims arrive in Salta after days of walking from distant locations. This penitence´s element is deeply marked, especially during the Nine Days of Prayer, before the festive ending takes place on September 15th, following a solemn procession. This gathers around 500.000 people each year, and signals the renewal of the pact of fidelity.

All of this makes September a special month to plan a visit to Salta. We invite you to share with the local people this inspiring and spiritual experience. A 4 days trip to find Salta´s true spirituality. We’ll visit the Main Cathedral, La Merced church, San Bernardo Convent and San Francisco church in its original design and unique colour.

During those days it’s  common to see pilgrims from distant villages arrive in Salta after more than 10 days of walking.

Our Tour Guide will also take us to the 9 of July Square to live the experience of being part of the spirituality of this festivity. We’ll be a part of one of the 9 days of prayers without which it will be hard to understand the mystique of the Miracle. We can be witnesses to the Paschal Triduum mass, a celebration that lasts 3 days.

join-us-for-a-inspiring-and-spiritual-experience-1We’ll experience The Miracle. In the afternoon, the bells of the Cathedral peal merrily inviting the parishioners to the Procession, which finishes with the renewal of the Pact of Fidelity. Thousand of people follow the images of the Lord & Virgin of the Miracle along the procession. The images enter the Cathedral while the Pilgrims wave at them with white handkerchiefs, representing purity.

Very important: bookings have to made with enough time in advance since accommodation in Salta has  high demand for this period.
