Patagonia echoes in the ears of many travellers around the world. Famous for its mountains, the diversity of its landscapes, the trekking circuits, the tasty grilled Patagonian lamb and its history full of legends and fascinating stories. Be a part of our scheduled trips to Patagonia Argentina and Chilean to get to know why everybody is talking about it.
And that´s how we are drawn to our first destination “El Calafate”. Home to the giant glacier “Perito Moreno”, famous for its length and a part of the Southern Continental Ice. Upon arrival we will be welcomed by our Tour Leader that will assist us throughout our trip.
After a good night´s sleep, we are ready to go on a trip to the Glaciar Perito Moreno where we´ll spend most of the day watching “the Powerful” of Patagonia. Then we´ll move on to El Chalten, national capital of trekking. On board a bus we´ll take Route 40 and ride along the coasts of Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma. We make a 10 minutes stop in La Leona and then we go on Provincial Route 23. After a 4 hours ride we´ll arrive in El Chalten. Here we make another stop at the National Parks Administration Office where we are briefed about what activities we can do in this beautiful village. Then we check in the hotel where we´ll spend the night.
In El Chalten we spend 4 days, doing different trekking-related activities and visiting the Mount Fitz Roy and the Laguna Torre look-out points. Both with stunning views.
The name “Chalten” comes from the Tehuelche language or Aonikenk which means “Smoking Mountain” due to the clouds that constantly crown its top, a fact that wrongly led to believe that this was a volcano. This mountain was considered to be sacred by the aborigenes and is a part of their cosmogony. Francisco P. Moreno christened it with the name of Fitz Roy on March the 2nd 1877 in honor of the HMS Beagle´s captain Robert Fitz Roy who in 1834 sailed along the Santa Cruz River. Although the Argentinian Cartography,in the last years, decided to use its former name again, disregarding the name Fitz Roy, that was used during most of the 20th century. The name Fitz Roy is mostly used in Chilean Cartography.
Another interesting fact is that in October 2014 El Chalten won second place in a ranking about “the best cities around the world that you need to visit” published by the Lonely Planet traveller´s guide in 2015. The winner was Washington DC, but in Argentina and Latin America it won first place. Privileged are those who can go and visit it.
3 days in this beautiful National Park where we can enjoy of a diversity of landscapes. On the second day we´ll do some trekking towards the Torres lookout point where we´ll have a spectacular view of the horn-shaped peaks after which this place was named. It´s a 18kms walk with mid and high difficulty degree, with the final stretch as a challenge as we will be climbing amongst the rocks. Reaching the lookout point is a reward to effort.
For 9 days and in the company of our expert Tour Leaders and Guides we´ll be able to visit some of the most amazing places in Argentinian Patagonia, and then come back fascinated by this experience. Join us on our scheduled trips and be a part of this unforgettable experience. We are waiting for you.
