Villa Pehuenia Ski Resort

Patagonia Argentina holds secrets that even many Argentines don’t known. There are places where sustainable projects and amazing landscapes meet, like the Villa Pehuenia Ski Resort in Neuquen, Argentina. We love sharing this kind of projects and locations that we know are a treasure of our country.

Villa Pehuenia Ski Resort “Batea Mahuida”, located 370 kilometers from Neuquén; is a ski resort that belongs to the Mapuche community Puel. Since the volcano “Batea Mahuida” went out, a lagoon was formed in its crater near which the “Mapuches” were installed. Its name means “high source”. One objective of this ski resort is the conservation of the area and the customs of the Aboriginal community who is in charge of this project.

This is part of the story: Colonel Abel Balda, an expert Antarctic mountaineer and ski instructor, was the creator of the ski center Caviahue and the Snow Park Cerro Wayle by means of the Caviahue SA Park company. Balda at the request of the Mapuche projected and helped the community to create this Snow Park.

Something we love about this ski center is that you can ski and also make other activities. It offers several services and their rates are very affordable, it is not a ski resort for crowds and that makes you enjoy more. Beyond its height, about 1900 meters above sea level, the volcano has plenty early snow, which makes it very attractive to those who are ski lovers as we are. You can practice Nordic or Alpine ski.

As a result, the season is one of the longest of all, starting in June and ending in October. The slopes prepared to practice skiing are protected from the wind and have large amounts of snow. You can ski for 5 months, which makes it one of the best seasons to enjoy from the snow.

In “Batea Mahuida” you can practice Nordic and Alpine skiing, you can take snowmobile rides or snowshoe walks in the Araucaria forests. The place also has got a small cafeteria where besides eating typical meals of the region, you can also buy Mapuche weavings.

Something that really struck us is the panoramic view we have of Icalma, Villarrica and Lanin volcanoes as well as lakes Aluminé and Moquehue. It is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful landscapes we have enjoyed in the Patagonia Argentina.

The park has got different lifts: a 600-meter T-Bar, a 200-meter Poma. In addition, it offers rental equipment (ski, boots, poles, skates, etc.), snowmobiles, dog sledding track, cafeteria and restaurant, first aid room, ski patrol service, kiosk and free parking.

Bike tour Buenos Aires

Ride a bike and explore the best neighborhoods in this fun and varied Bike Tour Buenos Aires. It’s an experience we love and it has become an excellent alternative to enjoy our city!

bike-tour-buenos-aires-generis-flower

We got on the comfortable beach cruiser bikes provided by the organizers of the tour, put our helmets on, and felt reassured by the fact that medical assistance, a bottle of mineral water and expert multilingual guides, all were included. We only had to start pedaling and enjoy a different morning. There is also an option at 2 pm for those who have trouble getting up early. Luckily, it didn’t rain that day, as we love the sun. All the same, rain gear is available for the tour, which is canceled only if it rains very heavily. These tours are carefully designed for all ages, taking into account the different situations that might arise.

The meeting point is Plaza San Martin located in the area of Retiro and close to the well-known Florida Street where most tourists walk around and buy leather goods and clothes, among many other products.

Our first tour took us to Puerto Madero, the neighborhood that is the most recent, expensive and visited by tourists and locals. Its old Docks have been renovated into first class restaurants, offices and lofts, with the best view of the city and the River Plate. At this point we are close to the ecological reserve, an area near the city where the environment and nature are protected. From there we continue to La Boca, a traditional port district which is the home of the most famous Argentine Football team, Boca Juniors. The great immigration wave that made Buenos Aires the city that it is today left its footprint there. It is the birthplace of tango and of traditional cafés. “Caminito” is a must see.

We continued our ride to San Telmo for its proximity to La Boca. It is the first neighborhood of Buenos Aires, inhabited by aristocratic families until the outbreak of the yellow fever in 1871, which obliged them to move to the north of the province of Buenos Aires. It is the quintessential neighborhood to learn about the historical heritage of the city.

There we can see the Government House (Casa Rosada), the Cabildo, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the most important public buildings. A meeting point for demonstrations and the birthplace of the Group of Mothers and Grandmothers of Plaza de Mayo, who peacefully claim for justice for their children and grandchildren who disappeared during the dictatorship.

The itinerary also includes The Immigrants’’ Hotel, Women’s Fountain, South Promenade, the Fountain of the Nereids, Catalinas Sur Towers in Retiro, Avellaneda Bridge, Curve of Rocha, Quinquela Martin Museum, Caminito street, and La Bombonera (Boca Juniors’ football arena), among others.

Reduce, Reuse & Recycle

We are a growing company and we also help others to grow. For this reason, we want to cooperate with foundations and organizations that bring growth to society and people with fewer resources. They really care and know what reduce, reuse, recycle mean.

Such is the case of “Fundación Compañía Social Equidad”. They have a recycling workshop where they receive donations of obsolete digital equipment which they recycle to later donate to organizations that cannot access new technology, with the objective of bridging the digital divide in the society. They also have a technical school where they train people who have been excluded from the labor market due to little or no knowledge of new technologies and web 2.0. Finally, they have an area of project implementation and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility)

reduce-reuse-recycle-foundationDue to the emergence of the digital divide that appears as a future threat to social integration in the year 2001, economic crisis in full, “Fundación Equidad” started to take shape. One of the things that led to its inception was the program of Digital Communication and Journalism where emphasis was placed on stimulating the desire of the participants to learn, create and produce, helping to improve their self-esteem. One workshop, aimed to 20 adolescents between 15 and 17 years, was held under the Young Web Program, from the Ministry of Education of the City.

Other prominent developments of the Foundation were Research for Education andTechnology to present an overview of programs for inclusion and use of technology in the schools of the City of Buenos Aires.

The School Computerisation Programme, which from 2001 provided computers to schools in five provinces of Argentina. They also created the Digital Community Centers with leaders and teachers in the country. They created 14 Digital Community Centers in 7 provinces that provide digital literacy and Internet access to poor people. A Digital Community Center is a place that provides public access to computers, training in the use of basic software applications, navigation and social services over the Internet.

Environmental pollution is a consequence of improper waste disposal and since at Kallpa we are committed to doing our portion for the environment care, we have decided to donate equipment and computer supplies to “Fundación Compañía Social Equidad”and to commit even more with all the aspects involving our development as a company as regards as social responsibility.

Travel to El Calafate Glaciers and Floes

We invite you to travel to El Calafate Glaciers and Floes known as “The National Capital of the Glaciers”. This city offers a wide range of activities that combine  beautiful natural environment, and exciting adventure. To   explore this extraordinary “white landscape”,  gives you an incredible insight of  Southern Patagonia.

El Calafate is the starting point to “Glaciares National Park” and a prelude to visit  “Perito Moreno”, the world known  glacier located 50 km away.

travel-to-el-calafate

The city was officially founded in 1927 to promote settlement in the area, but it was not until the creation of the Perito Moreno National Park in 1937, that developement really happened.
Located it on the southern shore of Lago Argentino, it has grown in the last decade due to the touristic activity and it has lately  become a main tourist destination.
Glaciares National Park was declared a UNESCO world Heritage site in 1981. These glaciers belong to the Patagonian Ice Caps, the largest continental ice extension after Antarctica and delights us with its snow-capped mountains, glacial lakes and forests.

travel-to-el-calafate-floes

For those who just want to enjoy  one of the most impressive natural landscapes, the Perito Moreno Glacier can be seen from walkways which lead you to different viewpoints from where you can admire the massive ice walls from different angles.

On the other hand, for those who are looking for adventure, it is possible to know the glacier by foot through  ice trekking excursions, and in different difficulties: medium or high.

Due to the precipitations from the Pacific Ocean, the Perito Moreno glacier grows 1 or 2 meters per day during a year. Then by accumulation of snow that sweeps into the ice, the glacier is “pushed” to Lago Argentino.

In irregular periods of two or four years, on different months, a bridge is formed with a cave of more than 50 m which eventually collapses, undermined by the pression of the water, giving a magnificent natural spectacle.

El Calafate offers many options such as trekking along Laguna Nimez Reserve, crossing to Isla Solitaria or visiting touristic Estancias.

A variety of boat excursions take you sailing through  Argentino Lake to see other glaciers, as Spegazzini and Upsala Glaciers. During these trips you will be sorrounded by beautiful icebergs from any size and different tones of blue.

Laguna Nimez Reserve is special for  “Bird Watchers”, because around 80 different species of birds can be seen. Laguna Nimez offers an ideal habitat to flamingo, cauquenes, black-necked swans, bandurrias, teros, among other birds.

Choose one (or more) of these options to visit El Calafate! And discover the wonderful Patagonia!
